We believe passionately that grouping children in small, developmentally similar groups helps with group cohesion, pastoral care and academic achievement. We cater for all ability ranges, although our ethos is to stretch students to the very best of their abilities in all areas.

Developing each student as an individual

The Middle School at Riverston provides a unique opportunity for students in Years 6, 7 and 8 to bridge the gap between Lower and Upper School.

There should be no artificial barriers to exploring boundaries in the academic, sporting or cultural fields. Above all, students should respect and value each other and take pleasure from the success of others, whilst offering support to those who may need it.

Ultimately, we aim to provide excellent teaching and a range of opportunities that centre on developing each student’s unique talents and interests.

What can we expect?

Every form in the Middle School and throughout the school, has a form tutor responsible for the overall progress of the form and for the academic and pastoral progress of each pupil.

Meetings are regularly held at the beginning of the academic year for Years 6, 7 and 8 parents to meet their child’s form tutor.

Parents are encouraged to contact the form tutor whenever they have a concern. In addition, Middle and Upper School has a designated senior master/mistress who oversees children’s progress throughout their Middle School years.

Homework is an essential part of the learning programme and all pupils are given a homework timetable and diary to help them organise their time. At Riverston we take continuity and progression very seriously, measuring performance and checking progress at every stage. It is very reassuring to know that every child is receiving real ‘value added’ throughout their educational journey.

A thriving house system offers all students the opportunity to take part in art, drama, music and debating in addition to competing in a wide range of sporting activities. There is much encouragement at this stage to join some of the many extra-curricular activities that are offered.

How does Middle School prepare my child for Upper School?

Our broad and balanced curriculum offers students an excellent foundation in all subject areas. Our dedicated team of teachers, tutors, pastoral carers and career advisors help each and every pupil make the right decision.

Facing GCSE’s may seem daunting, but we offer full support and guidance and will monitor your child’s progress at every stage. We encourage each pupil to work to their full potential academically, socially and as a fulltime member of the school.
